with Vanessa Malo-Kurzinski

Calendar Jul 27, 2020 at 9 am

Calling all junior horse fans! This camp session is designed for intermediate and advanced kids and teens who would like to learn advanced riding techniques, advanced horsemanship, and how to prepare for horse shows (it is ok if horse showing is not a goal. It is still fun to learn about horse shows and how to prepare!) . Ages 8-17

To be eligible for this camp, riders should:

  • Be able to walk and posting trot, in control (steer in a circle, change direction, and know how to see or feel & change their diagnals)
  • Have had some cantering experience (on a lunge line is ok)
  • Are able to navigate obstacles in an arena; trot over poles in a straight line, pass another horse and rider safely, able to look around the arena while riding in order to know where other riders are in the arena and what they are doing.

Riders will learn and practice:

  • Mane braiding
  • Show prep grooming and bathing
  • How a horse show runs
  • Horse show classes; differences, how to read a schedule, what a judge looks for
  • Questions that a horse show judge might ask a rider
  • How to learn a course (jumping is not required in this camp. For riders who have not jumped yet, we will use ground poles)
  • How to manage emotions, time, energy, and take care of yourself and your horse at a show

Campers will also learn advanced horse health:

  • How to take vitals on a horse (heart rate, breathing, and temperature)
  • Horse nutrition and feeding
  • Signs that a horse is healthy, unhealthy, or in distress
  • Horse care

Campers will also learn:

  • Advanced tack and boot cleaning
  • How to take tack apart and put it back together
  • Differences in types of tack and horse bits

Campers will also have opportunities to learn from seasoned competition trainer, Kris Yankula. On Friday (or other day - weather permitting), the riders will participate in a camp show for parents to demonstrate what they have learned!
